In the 2nd book in the Eileen McGrath Tarot Mysteries, psychic detective and nurse, Eileen McGrath, is recovering from a head injury and looking forward to resuming tarot readings at a local hair salon the day she stumbles across the body of Candyce Balmer in the serene Oakland, California Rose Garden. When her boyfriend and new boss, P.I. Atticus Spencer, is hired to investigate the murder, he convinces Eileen to work undercover caring for the victim’s terminally ill husband, a retired corporate agriculture lawyer. Tensions abound as brother and sister—the prime suspects in their mother’s killing—square off against one another and Eileen’s intuitive insight and relationship with Atticus once again comes under the scrutiny of OPD homicide detective, Daniel Burnette. The investigation soon morphs into a maze as convoluted as the one on the family estate and contact with the spirit of the dead matriarch, who bears a startling resemblance to the tarot card, The Queen of Wands, serves to broaden the list of suspects. Was Candyce’s murder a case of greed, matricide, or misdirected eco-terrorism? Or an even darker energy now turning its eye to Eileen’s presence in the household?

The Queen of the Barley Moon An Eileen McGrath Tarot Mystery Eileen McGrath Tarot Series Volume 2 Eloise Hill Books Reviews
I have a hunch these books will be made into a movie series one day. I was enraptured by the story, by the characters, who would not love Eileen the main character - she's a bawdy, opinionated psychic crime solving ex nurse who knows her goddess lore and seems just a tad horny all the time. Buy this book it is uplifting, funny and a true murder mystery, it made me smile, laugh and also seriously root for the underdog. I was impressed how Hill wove in current issues that are affecting our health and culture, such as GMO, class, wealth, land and eco issues, but I did not get all of that until I finished the book - A very SMART story.
Eloise Hill is a brilliant mystery writer and a masterful storyteller - leaving one laughing hysterically in one moment and at the edge of their seat in the next. I normally do not read fiction but I have found Eloise's books to be the exception. This is a fun yet insightful read, not too heavy yet with a powerful message and intriguing mystery- it's endlessly entertaining. It's the perfect travel companion, vacation read, or end of the day or weekend destressor.
Let's just say I like to read before going to bed and Eileen McGrath's adventure consistently kept me up past my bedtime! A "cozy" with an edge, Queen of the Barley Moon is suspenseful enough to stay up late but not too scary to keep me up all night.
Author Eloise Hill is more than a great storyteller, she has a knack to allow the reader to experience how Eileen's psychic and intuitive skills are felt... And how they're put to work.
Add to that mix a host of characters full of wit and humor and, voila! A great book that has me looking forward to book no. 3!
OMG!!! I loved the book, both are amazing!! You are a great writer and how I can see the chapter play out in my mind is even better!!
One thing I enjoy about following a series is getting to know the characters and watching them evolve. We get to see Eileen do just that in her relationship with the two men in her life as well as her close friends. Peppered in the mystery of who killed Candyce are both western medical tidbits and holistic/eastern medical tidbits. A fun addition if you are in the holistic field. Looking forward to book 3!
I saved this book for one of those nights of flannel and hot chocolate and it was all that and more. Eloise's second book was a smooth read and it felt like I already knew the characters from her first book, so it was like a reunion. It was one of those books that I didn't want to end. She is a talented and entertaining author, and I look forward to books number 3 in the series.
Excellent! I especially appreciated the Hill's lush, detailed writing, which brought the characters and settings to life, and her use of tarot and intuitive reading to advance the mystery. As a fellow tarot reader, I liked that the cards were used exactly as I use them, realistically, as a fine and powerful tool, not some wacky super power. Deftly plotted and expertly executed, The Queen of The Barley Moon was as marvelous a reading experience as I expected it to be. Can't wait for the next one!
